Learning Outcome 4: Peer Review- Be able to critique their own and others’ work by emphasizing global revision early in the writing process and local revision later in the process.

This learning outcome is focused on the ability to critically read a peer’s project and make constructive suggestions for change, in addition to the ability to evaluate one’s own work and identify opportunities for specific improvement.  In the paragraphs that follow, I will describe my peer editing process using perspectives (ideas, claims) and the explanation of text’s relationship to them.  In addition to local editing with signal phrases and in text citations, I also followed the writer’s thesis to the conclusion.

Introduction: Peer editing is something that can be very beneficial, but also very challenging. Sometimes the edits are limited to surface level corrections, which help, but limit the potential of your essay. I think my peer and I did a good job of providing strong feedback that will overall make our essays better. This is the glaring positive of peer editing, being able to find things that you may not have caught when initially reading over or writing your own essay. Overall, I think this peer editing was a success.

The essay I read was about dealing with the loss of a loved one, something no one wants to experience. In this essay, I often found myself wanting to read more with the strong hooks, powerful meaning, and personal connections the author made. All their ideas were there, but at times could’ve worked on word choice and the flow of the essay.

Whenever I write an essay, I always find a way to have spelling errors and use extra words. A lot of the peer edits I received pertained to spelling errors and deleting words. I’m glad I had an extra set of eyes look my paper over because I always find a way to miss a handful of spelling errors when I reread my writings myself. Stylistically, I think I did well on this piece, but lacked signal phrases on a few occasions and could use more of a connection in the conclusion.
